How are we to understand our calling as Christians? Is the single life a calling? How does being single impact our vocation? Such questions were at the heart of our small-group discussions and in the plenum throughout the weekend.
Nicolas Kessely, one of the speakers, showed that our Christian calling is to be a witness to the grace of God to people around us, whether we are single or not. God has called each of His children and made them a part of His family, liberating them from the seductive power of sin and equipping them to be a blessing to those around them.
A number of those present had an opportunity to bear witness to this reality in their life. A., who suffers from Down’s Syndrome, which she described as “like having every day to lug a suitcase too heavy for her”; E. having difficulty with widowhood; P. deserted by her husband… such testimonies to God’s consolation and faithfulness in all circumstances encouraged many of the audience. Several were comforted and strengthened in their difficulties. S. and M. in their contributions gave some keys to pressing on in the face of injustice or suffering: keeping our eyes on Jesus, accepting His will for our life, keeping on believing in the goodness of God whatever the circumstances.
In the small groups we studied 1 Peter 2.18-25 and 5.6-11, which was very edifying. Each was able to articulate their thoughts and interrogations about the passages, which led to deep and authentic sharing.
The Easter weekend turned out to be a magic parenthesis for every participant. We had time to get to know one another, to encourage one another and to bear one another’s burdens. But there was also time for relaxation, for games, walks, a good film and enjoying the good food prepared by Claude, Edith and their team.
Everyone agreed that three days was too short! The organisers are convinced such weekends need to continue because they help to build up the body of Christ. We hope we will given help to persevere with them.
