What’s the point of Christmas without Jesus Christ?

For some people, Christmas is about illuminated store fronts, full shopping carts, magnificent decorations, a spectacular meal, and the stuff children’s dreams are made of, Santa Claus with his sleigh full of presents.

For many, it’s an occasion for family gatherings. For others, Christmas is synonymous with solitude or grief. But for how many of us is Jesus at the center of the holiday? If he is ignored, Christmas becomes a birthday celebration for someone who isn’t even invited to the party. Christmas transforms into a pagan festival, an empty cradle, a history without heroes, an excuse to pursue our consumerist frenzy.

The true story of Christmas is wonderful. It announces the arrival of a Savior. It invites faith, joy and reflection on the generous love of a perfect God, who holds out His arms to the sinners that we are. What have we done with such divine love, with the Savior who was born in a manger and died on a cross?

Christmas without Jesus carries no hope! True Christmas is good news! God in the flesh comes to the earth, offering those who believe in him the chance for a relationship based on forgiveness and faith. He gives the opportunity for all to begin again and grants new and worthwhile life.

The joy of Christmas is that which results in the personal discovery of God. So let us continue to proclaim His forgiveness and grace to those thirsty for justice, for truth and for sincerity – those who very much want to hear it. Merry Christmas!
