A new step for Gilles and Lydia Georgel

After a life devoted to the service of the Lord with FPC, Gilles retired at the end of December 2021. We asked him to come back to the main stages of his journey.

At 19 the Lord revealed himself to me through his word. On a spiritual level, I knew nothing. Very quickly, however, the call of God was heard in my heart. I thirsted for the word, and I couldn’t hide my faith. After the army, the Lord prompted Nicolas Kessely to dare to take me with him, with the agreement of the elders of the church of Vagney. There was so much to be done in many areas. Back in the Vosges after 2 years of training at discipleship school, I had the joy of working with Daniel and Ursula Herrmann for 8 years (including 4 with Lydia). They have been inspiring role models for us at all levels. During this time, the Lord confirmed my calling with multiple conversions of friends, of relationships that last even to this day.

In 1988 we moved to Hirson. The terrain was much more difficult, and we were often alone. We stayed there for 12 years. Here, the Lord has also given us much long-lasting fruit. In 2000, we joined St-Quentin. We are thinking of staying in Gauchy, where we live, for our retirement.

What big lessons have you learned?

The miracle of rebirth is the work of God alone. He attracts, opens hearts and gives birth from above. We are just tools.

The precious help that Lydia represents. We are different. She has the qualities that I required in order for the ministry to be effective.

The importance of unity in the team. Better to separate if it doesn’t work.

The need for perseverance. We need to think carefully before making the decision to quit a job and get our bearings. There will always be difficult times. However, we should not draw too hasty conclusions.

What did you find the most difficult?

Certainly, the dark periods of depression that I went through. I also realized that I do not have the character of a teacher and that it is difficult for me to confront others with their sins when necessary. I fought for a long time with a feeling of inferiority and a lack of self-confidence. I have also suffered at times from having little financial support, although faithful Christians and churches have been behind us for decades.

What helped you persevere?

Without a doubt, the joy that I have found – and continue to find – in meditating on the Word of God and in personal prayer. Writing has also been a blessing for me to compensate for the difficulties of ministry. Behind these things, I see the faithfulness of God who tirelessly sustained and strengthened me.
