Timothy, imitator of Paul, imitator of Jesus

“Don’t let anyone look down on you because you are young, but set an example for the believers in speech, in conduct, in love, [in spirit,] in faith and in purity.” 1 Timothy 4.12 NIV

In this verse Paul encourages Timothy to respect a divine principle: to be an example. The term used here means a mark, an impression. To be an example means leaving an impression with other people. A believer’s behaviour, attitude and words exercise an influence on their surroundings. It should be the best possible.

A disciple of Jesus is called to leave an indelible impression on their surroundings. How? Paul’s exhortation to Timothy tells us how.

In speech: we need to watch our language, to speak words of encouragement which show appreciation of others. Even when we have to rebuke someone, we should watch our language and choose our words carefully.

In conduct: we should avoid any discrepancy between speech and attitude. The two must be consistent. The best way to leave a positive mpression on others is to live out what we say.

In love: our words and actions should express it.

In spirit: we should demonstrate a fine spirit, the right attitude, a positive mentality. Let us be an example by aiming at honesty, justice, integrity and truth.

In faith: in our words and attitudes we should show that we are moved by a deep and unshakable confidence in God. Fear, worry and slander can be communicated, but don’t forget: so can faith!

In purity: we need to have the courage to be different and take our stand for unpopular convictions in matters of purity.

There will thus be no discrepancy between different areas of our life: family, work, church, neighbourhood, acquaintances. The world needs to see the marks of the gospel in the lives of men and women whose lifestyle is balanced, wise, coherent and harmonious.

Above all, in his First Letter to the Corinthians (11.1) Paul specifies that he himself is an imitator of Christ,  he supreme example. He is the absolute reference point for Christians who wish to be models who reflect Him. If we are imitators of Christ, no matter what our age, God will be able to use us to represent Him, to make a mark on our surroundings and to have a positive influence on them.
