His visit provided the opportunity for 3 evangelical churches in Douai to meet. Although there have been projects shared between them, this is the first time in 8 years that all 3 churches have had a meeting together.
On Saturday evening, George spoke to the young people and moved us deeply by his testimony: what God can do with a life that is entirely devoted, without reserve, to Him! He spoke with such honesty and surprising candor about his own life’s struggle against sin. He then left us with this verse to nourish our prayers and encourage complete devotion: “But I do not count my life of any value to myself, if only I may finish my course and the ministry that I received from the Lord Jesus, to testify to the good news of God’s grace (1).”
On Sunday morning, we were touched by his joy and emotion upon seeing the reunion of the 3 churches in love and fellowship. He called on us, from the youngest to the oldest gathered there – himself alongside a group of centenarian Christians who inspired him with their zeal – to be sent by God, even if it’s only across the street to love our neighbor. His self-deprecating humor and numerous stories made us laugh a lot. He also blessed us by distributing free books. He even urged though who don’t like to read to take one, if only to be polite.
It was a memorable weekend, spent in company with a very ordinary man – an example and encouragement for us all – who was sent by God to work for Him in an extraordinary way. Let’s follow his example, let’s devote ourselves without reserve and let God do wonders in our lives!
